PAINTING THE BEAST

Well here is the nearly completed project ready for paint. It's taken me 21 months to get this far. I've never taken on such a big project before, especially painting. This is going to be quite a learning experience.

Here is a small sample of what the finished product will be like. The airplane will be mostly metallic blue. The front will have red flames on it. The colors are "laser red" and "electric blue pearl coat"

A sea of blue. Lots of work here. Each part took at least one day. The elevators and rudder took four days each.

Here is the fuselage after two week of work filling sheet metal etc. My fuselage side are REALLY crappy due to poor riveting at the factory. I will fill all the rivets along the fuselage sides back to the rear passenger seat back. Aft of that, it look crappy, but good enough. Later kits have much better workmanship. I am using two types of fillers here. All of it is on top of PPG DX 1791 wash primer. This is what gives the metal a gold color. The fillers are Z-grip for big area, and "Icing" for thin areas. This Icing stuff is fast and easy to sand. It's sandable after 25 minutes The last coats are K-36 primer.
Here is shot of my handy home made spray booth. It's made from PVC pipe and plastic sheeting. There are 3 box fans with filters to flow air thru the booth and outside thru a rollup garage door. I can control the door opening and thus airflow with a garage door opener remote control. There are 8 Fluorescent lights in there and two portable 500 watt floods Still not enough light I'm afraid.
