The Lister Generator Project  FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

I receive about 10 emails a week from all over the world. Many are questions, and some are touching stories of life with a Lister, some as childhood memories and others current real world situations.

Q: Where did you get your engine.

A: I bought this one from an exporter called LOVSON in Mumbai India. The engine itself was built by Power Anand in Mumbai. Lovson was only an exporter. (read middle man - extra cost)

Q: Would you buy another from Lovson?

A: No, I would and have bought more engines from Power Anand. The man in charge there is a gentleman named Atul Patal. He has been great to work with, provided me with world class customer service,  always sensitive to my needs and has on occasion, without provocation, sent me free upgrades, and spare parts. Every time a hurricane, nears Florida, Atul calls me from India and offers any needed parts to ensure the storm will be dealt with.

His website is http://www.poweranand.com/

Q: How's it running these days?

A: Just fine. Total time as of this publishing is 400 hours. It's getting a bit dirty from collecting dust and the once shiny green paint has discolored and stained from oils etc so it's lost it's luster, but still runs and starts every time, with no additional failures to date.

Q: How does the cooling system work?

A: It works well, but has only minimal capacity, just enough to get the job done. After much experimentation, I've determined that radiator is completely adequate for the job, but... There is a flow issue with the thermosyphonic cooling. Simply, but, the ware doesn't flow fast enough thru the system. This is manifested by large differential temperatures between the radiator intake and outlet. Usually around 50 deg F. This results in the water exiting the head to sit at around 200 deg F. and the temp entering the Lower cylinder water jacket at around 155 deg F.

I think this is less than ideal and cast iron cylinder wear is reduced by operating the engine at a higher temperature. I'd like to see 210 deg F. in the cylinder. The only way to achieve this is with a forced pumping system. We've built a couple systems with electric Grundfos high temperature water circulating pumps installed. They work great, the temperature spread is only a few degrees, and the radiator fan require a massive reduction in voltage to slow it down enough to get the engine to warm up.

Q: How much fuel does it burn?

A: No guarantee here but it seems to burn around .1 GPH per KW of power produced. I average 6 gallons per day here in Florida running the A/C and other house loads. The nice about these engines is the fuel consumption drops when the load drops so it burns very little fuel at night when every thing is shut down.

Q: Where did you get the Generator head?

A: I bought form a guy named Joel on eBay. I also bought a 5 KW head from Rocky Mountain Power Systems. It is a nice unit and works well.

Q: What else have you built?

A: I am finishing up the 6/1 project. It is coupled to a 5 KW ST head and mounted on a 4 wheel cart for portability. The flywheels are badly out of balance and the thing shakes like crazy but I fully expect I can balance this beast into a smooth running engine. There will be more web pages for the 6/1 project soon.

Q: PLEASE PLEASE fix page 38 on the secret manual pages!
(those pages are secret! How would you know if page 38 was messed up?)

A: OK! Done!

A: I live on a remote island in the Caribbean and rely on my real Lister CS for power and want some genuine Lister parts to keep it running. Got any suggestions?

A: Try  HTTP://WWW.bethor-aeon.com/ListerParts.html
He is in Puerto Rico and can order original CS parts.
